Think you know about your football club? Want to learn some more? Join us on the glentoran trail.
Created by the Glentoran Community Trust, The Glentoran Trail is a 90 minute bus tour focusing on the East Belfast Community, and in particular the varied and colourful history of Glentoran Football Club and its contribution to the local community.
This unique experience will coincide with two significant anniversaries which had a huge impact on the people of East Belfast (and further afield), namely The Blitz (70 years ago) and the launching of the RMS Titanic (100 years ago).
By commemorating these historical events, the Trust hopes to achieve:-
· An enthusiastic celebration of our proud history
· Raised awareness of the places and people who formed our identity and made us who and what we are today
· A demonstration of the role that Glentoran FC played in shaping the community in which it was central
Informative, yet entertaining, with a unique twist, the Trail has been developed and organised by members of the GCT and will be narrated by a qualified tour guide.
Departing from the Oval Grounds it will mostly centre in and around the East of Belfast, extending to the Ormeau area ,a briefly visiting the Antrim Road via the city centre and across out onto Queen’s Island before returning to the Oval where there will be an opportunity to socialise afterwards in the fonaCAB Suite.
On the Trail we will look at East Belfast’s considerable contribution to society through (amongst others)
· Industry - H&W, Shorts, Musgraves, The Avoniel and Connswarer Distilleries, The Owen O’Cork Mill and the Belfast Ropeworks.
· Sport - Glentoran FC, George Best
· Music - Van Morrison
· Literature - C S Lewis
The history of Glentoran Football Club will be interwoven throughout the tour from the club’s formation to the present day, highlighting ‘The Team That Built the Titanic’, the influential roles of benefactors and businessmen Victor Coates, Sir Daniel Dixon, William Pirrie, John ‘Toby’ Mercer, players such as Billy Emerson and Sammy Napier, and other characters and main events.
RUNNING ALL THROUGH AUGUST 2011 THE GLENTORAN TRAIL IS A GROUND-BREAKING CONCEPT AND THE FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE UNITED KINGDOM.
A GREAT WAY TO SPEND AN HOUR OR TWO WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY VISITING THE PLACES AND LITERALLY BEING INTRODUCED TO THE PEOPLE WHO MADE OUR FOOTBALL CLUB GREAT.
